Oct 2009 [School Visits II]

In late October, I had a chance to visit several top notch boarding schools in the mainland U.S. - thanks to Parker, Steve, Dan, and Nathan who helped us reach out to those schools.

At Cate School, we were very impressed with how everyone of their staff members resides on their beautiful campus at the top of the hill in Santa Barbara and shares the sense of "tight community". When we visited Groton School outside Boston, we witnessed how their leadership education is designed around the boarding system which prides itself on a long history and tradition. We also visited Phillips Academy in Exeter and Andover. Unlike the other two, their school size is over 1,000 each, and we were just amazed at the depth and breadth of their course offerings as well as their facilities. It was extremely interesting how they ensured a close care to individual student in such a large community through small class size and advisor system.

It is easy to say that we aim for "holistic development of the youth". But through this trip, I had to admit that there's quite a gap between U.S. schools and schools in Japan in how to "really" make it happen. We were able to initiate talks with a few of the schools mentioned above in how best we can import their best practices. I can't wait to fit them into Asian context and make it something original of our own...!
