[October 2007]

Mindanao is not the only part of the Philippines that is affected by armed conflict. Katipunan Village, situated in the middle of Panay Island, used to experience monthly incidence of conflicts and unlawful arrests of the community members.

UNICEF has been supporting local NGO's training on human rights in this area. As a result, the community became equipped with the knowledge and negotiation skills against the national army as well as the armed groups, and succeeded in decreasing the number of incidences significantly.

Seminars are held in a local church with minimal facilities. Yet this seemingly very primitive activity can change the life of the entire community over time. UNICEF and its partners continue to strive for realization of one of the most basic human rights - the right to live, in peace - in many parts of the Philippines.
